Citizen science can add value to Phytophthora monitoring: five case studies from western North America

چکیده
Phytophthora species are plant pathogens responsible for many notable biological invasions in agricultural, forests, and natural ecosystems. Detection monitoring invasive introductions of spp. is time resource intensive. Development citizen science detection programs can aid these efforts focused on reducing Phythophthora impacts. There multiple methods detecting suitable approaches such as, leaf sampling, stream baiting or soil collections. Here we summarize five active projects western North America where scientists aiding the research surrounding their Projects varied scope, scale, methods, capacity, but each project increased scientists’ abilities surveillance advanced knowledge species. Some were integrated with school programs, others involved hands-on training small groups, another approach invited mass participation from interested citizens. Overall, all had positive outcomes multiplied across education, monitoring, research. Together case studies demonstrate how amplify efforts, advance baseline knowledge, reduce impacts invasions.

Phytophthora ramorum in North America
Two apparently unlinked events marked the beginning of one of the most devastating forest diseases known to man in recent times: Sudden Oak Death (SOD). In the mid 1990s, while a novel species of Phytophthora was being isolated from mildly diseased Rhododendron and Viburnum plants in German and Belgian nurseries, the first reports of inexplicable death of tanoaks (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) ...
متن کاملTesting the Value of Citizen Science for Roadkill Studies: A Case Study from South Africa
Roads impact wildlife through a range of mechanisms from habitat loss and decreased landscape connectivity to direct mortality through wildlife-vehicle collisions (roadkill). These collisions have been rated amongst the highest modern risks to wildlife. With the development of “citizen science” projects, in which members of the public participate in data collection, it is now possible to monito...
متن کاملThe value of citizen science for ecological monitoring of mammals
Citizen science approaches are of great interest for their potential to efficiently and sustainably monitor wildlife populations on both public and private lands. Here we present two studies that worked with volunteers to set camera traps for ecological surveys. The photographs recorded by these citizen scientists were archived and verified using the eMammal software platform, providing a profe...
متن کاملCan Confucianism Add Value to Democracy Education?
Democracy essentially means ‘people ruling themselves’ or ‘self-rule’. In the light of this, democracy education should aim at nurturing citizens well-suited to live in a democracy, that is, capable of ‘ruling themselves’ or ‘selfrule’. Ideal citizens in a democracy should seek to be well-informed, have independent decision-making abilities with regard to community affairs, possess high degree ...

An initial classifier considers the main frequency component of the call, centered around 13.5 kHz and spanning mainly between 11 and 17 kHz. The ratio between this and a range where little noise is present (8–9 kHz) is a measure of the acoustic energy of the cicada call, as can be defined as: • Only cicada native to the UK • Only present in the New Forest • High pitched call at ~ 13.5 kHz • Di...
